2007 Green-e Energy Verification Report Released,
Shows Nearly 60% Increase in Certified Renewable Energy Sales

15.7 Million MWh of certified renewable energy purchased by
nearly 260,000 residential and 10,000 commercial customers in 2007

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (November 20, 2008)—The Center for Resource Solutions (CRS) announced today the release of the 2007 Green-e Energy™ Verification Report, which highlights Green-e Certified renewable energy sales in 2007. The report shows an almost 60 percent increase in total sales volume over the previous year, equivalent to nearly 16 million MWh of renewable energy generation. Nearly 2.7 million MWh were purchased or generated by companies participating in Green-e Marketplace, a significant increase over 2006 purchases of 114,000 MWh that demonstrates organizations' growing commitment to certified renewable energy.

Utility participation in Green-e Energy grew significantly in 2007, with certified utility sales reaching 1.2 million MWh in 2007, an 82% increase from 2006. This reflects a rise in certified residential and commercial purchases. Approximately 200,000 customers participated in green-pricing programs, with residential purchases increasing 58% over 2006. Commercial purchases were up 177% in the same period.

"The 2007 Green-e market results are a testament to consumers' commitment to clean, renewable energy options that goes well beyond regulatory requirements," said CRS Executive Director Arthur O'Donnell. "Even as the adoption of mandatory renewable portfolio standards has grown to include more than half of the United States, the voluntary market represented by Green-e certified transactions continues to expand—proving that compliance and voluntary markets are not only compatible but highly complementary."

Green-e Energy is the nation's leading renewable electricity certification program, providing independent, third party verification to ensure renewable energy products meet strict environmental and consumer-protection standards set through a collaborative stakeholder-review process with environmentalists, consumer advocates, and energy experts. Providers of Green-e Energy Certified renewable energy undergo an annual verification audit to document that they purchased or generated enough renewable energy in quantity and type to match their marketing claims and meet customer demand. The 2007 verification results represent renewable energy sales from 183 marketers, utilities, distributors, and electric service providers.

Highlights of the 2007 Green-e Energy Verification Report include:

  • Nearly 15.7 million MWh of Green-e Energy Certified renewable energy were sold in 2007, an increase of nearly 60% over 2006
  • In 2007, sales of Green-e Energy Certified renewable energy certificates reached their highest level yet, at 13.8 million MWh, a 58% increase over 2006 sales
