Solar Drying of Coffee (La Sepultura Biosphere)

Renewables and Micro Enterprise in Southern Mexico

Shade grown organic coffee is an important crop on the edge of and within this reserve. GGI is providing assistance in solar drying of the coffee. The goal is to minimize the loss to spoilage, which takes up to 20% of the crop, while improving the quality and cleanliness of the coffee. By increasing production on less area and improving the economics of the coffee business, there will be less pressure by the coffee growers to expand into the reserve. In addition, the more favorable economics of shade-grown, organic coffee can encourage others to adopt this method rather than the traditional approach of cutting down all the trees before planting coffee and then using large quantities of chemicals.
