Solar Electric Fencing for Diary Farmers (El Triunfo Biosphere)

Renewables and Micro Enterprise in Southern Mexico

The old method of dairy farming was to turn the cows loose to forage throughout the landscape. By controlling the cows within certain boundaries, farmers are able to manage the land using intensive grazing methods (rotational grazing) that is good for the grasses and overall health of the ranch. The net results of cattle management using solar electric fences are: greater milk yields, better land management, higher incomes for farmers, and less pressure to expand grazing into surrounding preserves. Solar electric fencing also provides invaluable benefits to the natural environment of the Reserve itself, by keeping the cattle off of the hillsides and out of streams, and by preventing overgrazing.
